Isn’t teaching magical?

At one moment while watching CODA (child of deaf adults), I closed my eyes to reflect on what is teaching and what my purpose is. Magical moments like below are one of the reasons to teach, I believe.
- How do you feel when you sing?
- I don’t know, it’s hard to explain…
Then, Ruby languages in ASL how she feels, and her music teacher Bernardo touched by the response offers her to practise together. That’s how Ruby, the only hearing person in her deaf family, who “talked funny“ when she started school starts preparing for Berklee College of Music.
This moment shows how languaging transcends verbal expressions, named languages, senses, and modes. It also shows how education is transformative: teachers and students are magicians with agency to “cast wonderful spells” (co-construct knowledge) that can change our lives for the better 🪄 If a teacher can contribute even a little to students’ dreams, what else is there to ask for.
